40th Annual Spawning Run

Tuesday, September 17, 7:00 am at Ala Moana Park

Enjoy an early morning seaside run at beautiful nearby Ala Moana Park and Magic Island. The 5K Spawning Run and Carcass Crawl is an unique AFS conference event, now in its 40th year! The run will be self timed so runners are encouraged to use a self timing app. Water will be available along the course, and refreshments will be provided at the finish line. Not a runner? Take a leisurely stroll in the Carcass Crawl!

Register soon in order to receive a commemorative T-shirt. If you have already registered for AFS 154 or need to pay separately, you can return back to your registration account to add/pay for the run. Registration for the run is $35.

Transportation to the run will not be provided. We will meet at Magic Island alongside the Kahanamoku Lagoon at the southeast corner of the public parking area for Ala Moana Park (green dot on map). Magic Island is a ~10 minute walk down Atkinson Drive from the Ala Moana Hotel.

Spawning Run T-shirt Contest

We had great submissions to the T-shirt contest and we’re showcasing both the winner and runner-up in full color below.

Winner

Cheyenne Lobato

My name is Cheyenne Lobato, and I was born, raised, and still live in the beautiful state of Idaho. Since I can remember, I have always been drawn to animals and art of all kinds, and often find my works feature a muse from the animal kingdom. I work at GTseek, a biotech company specializing in custom genotyping solutions, and oversee all things administrative from client quotes to web development. I am lucky to have the occasional opportunity to use my graphic design skills in various areas of the business while feeling a quiet kinship with the wide range of species we work with on a daily basis. The researchers we get to work with are always inspiring in their passion for their species of focus. Outside of work, I like to joke that I have 11 different hobbies I cycle through, depending on where my interest and attention lie at the time. My current favorites are acrylic painting, digital art, and ceramics. I also love a good strategic board game with lots of little pieces and overwhelming mechanics.

The design for the 40th Annual Spawning Run features two of the area’s fisheries species—the charismatic Nairagi (Striped Marlin), and the Gindai (Flower Snapper), one of the “Deep 7” bottomfish of the Hawaiian Islands. I have been lucky to have been a guest on the Big Island several times and wanted to capture the vibrancy of life with the addition of plumeria, palms, and corals, with the surfboard lending to the ‘surf’ aesthetic of the design. I look forward to seeing everyone on Magic Island!

Runner-up

Katie Harrington

My name is Katie Harrington, and I am a Research Technician at the Center for Fisheries Electronic Monitoring at Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, FL. In this role, I contribute to fisheries research in the Gulf of Mexico by refining electronic monitoring data processes and automating the production of reports, maps, and other deliverables tailored for industry stakeholders and management. I am also pursuing a master’s degree in Data Intelligence from the University of South Florida. Outside of work and school, I enjoy creating illustrations and graphic designs focused on fisheries-related topics, such as reef fish, sharks, and commercial fishing.
